Portishead covers

Party People.

Have been revisting the Portishead album “Third” a lot recently and I think it is rather smashing. I think it will be one of the best albums to come out this year. Personally I think Portishead are one of the greatest bands of all time and have bearly put a foot wrong throughout their whole career. Every thing I have ever heard them do together or as a part of a side project (Beth’s “Out of Season” LP, Geoff Barrow’s beats on Stephaine McKays “McKay” LP & Adrian Utley’s production on Goldfrapp’s “Felt Mountain”) have been amazing.

This leads me to a very very rare 7″ that Geoff & Adrian brought out under the different monikor “The Jimi Entley Sound”.  It is a piece of vinyl I would very very very much like to own (3 very’s …i want it bad) so much so if anyone owns one or knows where I could buy one please tell me. On it there are two cover versions of The Shadows “Apache” (which has the illest drum break!!!!) and the Edan sampled “Charlie’s Theme”. Below are youtube links so you can hear just exactly how fucking amazing these versions are. Enjoy.

Life Festival

2 07 2008

Party People. Just to let you know we are playing our only Irish show for the summer this friday at the Life Festival down in Galway. We are heading the Amphitheatre StageThe Amphitheatre Stage which should be amazing. Think we are onstage at 1.30am. Gonna play some new tunes off the new album. Can’t wait!

Also currently re-listening to loads and loads of Curtis Mayfield, the man is simply a genius. Not only writing loads and loads of classics for himself but also lots of other people including this killer classic by the Staple Singers. This has his classic sound all over it and has been sampled by tons of people like Ice Cube & Kanye/John Legend.Enjoy!

Messiah J & The Expert are playing the Life Festival in County Galway, Ireland next Friday the 4th of July. We are headlining the amphitheatre stage. Tickets are still available. To purchase go here. This is our only confirmed show of the summer and we will be previewing songs from our third album which will be released on Inaudible Records later this year.

Shout outs to nialler 9 for shedding light on an exhaustive list of mp3s of emcee battles from 1979 – 1987. It’s a pretty amazing archive and what I’ve listened to so far is really interesting. Make sure you also check out this Dutch documentary made on Hip Hop music from the mid eighties too:

And speaking of battles, Mos Def has had a deadly idea. To find out more click here

Lastly, on the old school Hip Hop tip… anyone interested in the making of some classic golden era rap songs? D – Nice went around and interviewed some old school artists including Blacksheep and Dana Dane in his True Hip Hop stories series. Here’s one with YZ talking about the making of one of my stone cold favourites, Thinkin’ Of A Masterplan (which is my song of the day!):

In other news:

I went to the gym yesterday and did weights for the first time in years and my arms are about to fall off, I saw a brilliant and powerful documentary on the West Memphis 3 called Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, I’m trying to work out the tracklisting for the new MJEX album and I’m moving to Inchicore on Monday. Breathe Out…
